Hyderabad records sharpest groundwater drop as levels fall in 17 Telangana districts

Groundwater levels declined in 17 districts of Telangana in June 2026 due to a 12 per cent rainfall deficit, with Hyderabad recording the sharpest drop of 2.47 metres. The state's groundwater monitoring department revealed the findings in its June 2026 Groundwater Level Scenario report, which analyzed data from 1,771 piezometers across all 33 districts.
State officials attributed the stress on groundwater resources to deficient rainfall during the month. Telangana received a cumulative 115 mm of rainfall against the normal 130 mm, representing a 12 per cent deficit. Although Hyderabad fell within the normal rainfall range for June, it still witnessed the most severe drop in the state.
Several other districts also recorded notable declines compared to June last year. Rajanna Sircilla saw a drop of 1.51 metres, followed by Jayashankar Bhupalpally and Peddapalli, which both fell by 1.33 metres. Nizamabad recorded a decline of 1.12 metres, while Jagityal, Bhadradri Kothagudem, Adilabad, and Mahabubabad registered drops ranging from 0.73 to 0.99 metres.
Despite the declines in nearly half of the districts, the state's average groundwater level showed a marginal improvement of 0.01 metre compared to June 2025, standing at 9.46 metres below ground level (mbgl).
This minor state-wide average improvement was driven by 16 districts that registered rising water tables. Yadadri Bhuvanagiri recorded the highest increase of 2.86 metres. Other improvements were logged in Nagarkurnool, Rangareddy, Jangaon, and Vikarabad.
According to the report, groundwater levels remain deepest in Medak and Vikarabad, where the average depth reached 13.30 mbgl. Conversely, Khammam recorded the shallowest groundwater table at 5.46 mbgl.
Officials also noted a seasonal depletion of 5.05 metres across all 33 districts when compared to the post-monsoon levels of November 2025, prior to the start of the monsoon recharge period.
