Hyderabad Police Plan AI Enforcement System On Outer Ring Road To Reduce Accidents

Authorities are planning to introduce an artificial intelligence (AI)-based electronic enforcement system on the Outer Ring Road (ORR) in Hyderabad to curb fatal accidents and penalize repeat traffic offenders. The proposal was discussed during a recent coordination meeting on ORR safety, which brought together top officials from the police, Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA), and other infrastructure partners.
City Police Commissioner V.C. Sajjanar stated that the administration is actively exploring the technology to enable the seamless identification of diverse traffic violations. According to Sajjanar, an analysis of traffic data revealed that nearly 99 percent of flagged vehicles on the highway were repeat offenders.
The meeting also addressed the extreme hazard posed by stationary and broken-down vehicles on the ORR, which have frequently led to fatal accidents. Sajjanar directed patrolling teams and infrastructure partners to ensure the immediate removal of such obstructions. He strictly warned commuters against parking or stopping vehicles on the main carriage-way. In the event of a vehicle breakdown, commuters were urged to immediately call the toll-free helpline number 14449 for swift assistance.
The coordination meeting was attended by HMDA Commissioner Sarfaraz Ahmad and HMDA Urban Forestry Director Rohit Gopidi. Representatives from the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC), Hyderabad Growth Corridor Limited (HGCL), and IRB Infra also participated, alongside traffic DCPs and additional DCPs from Hyderabad, Cyberabad, and Malkajgiri.
During the session, senior officials reviewed the progress of decisions made during their previous coordination meeting held in May. Officials announced that 80 critical accident-prone spots have been identified across the ORR stretch, and enforcement measures have already been strengthened at several of these locations.
HMDA Commissioner Sarfaraz Ahmad committed to providing all necessary infrastructural upgrades to support the safety initiative. He stated that the HMDA will install appropriate warning signage and systematically eliminate the identified black spots in close coordination with all stakeholder departments to ensure a safer transit experience for commuters.
