Hyderabad NIN Study Finds Vitamin D3 Outperforms D2 for Heart and Muscle Health

A new study by researchers at the Hyderabad-based National Institute of Nutrition (NIN) has found that Vitamin D3 is significantly more effective than Vitamin D2 in supporting heart health and enhancing muscle strength. The findings, published in the journal Molecular Nutrition and Food Research, challenge the common belief that both forms of the vitamin are interchangeable.

The research revealed that Vitamin D3 is twice as effective as Vitamin D2 at raising the body's blood Vitamin D levels. Beyond simply increasing blood markers, D3 demonstrated a superior capacity to actively improve cardiovascular and muscle tissue structure, metabolism, and overall physical strength.

In contrast, the study showed that plant- or fungus-derived Vitamin D2 failed to deliver comparable structural and metabolic benefits. Researchers conducted a comprehensive evaluation covering body composition, muscle strength, blood markers, calcium status, and the microscopic structure of heart and muscle tissues to assess the physiological impact of both variants.

A key finding from the NIN study is the interaction between the two forms when taken together. Researchers found that combining Vitamin D2 and D3 actually reduces the overall potential and efficacy of D3. The study warned that taking blended supplements or alternating between the two forms can diminish the therapeutic advantages offered by standalone D3.

The findings provide clear guidance for consumers and healthcare professionals evaluating nutritional supplementation. The researchers advised checking supplement labels to select pure Vitamin D3 rather than blended products to ensure optimal cardiovascular and musculoskeletal outcomes.
