Hyderabad Nepali Association Appeals Against Stereotyping of Workers

On 2 July 2026, the Nepali community in Hyderabad issued an appeal to citizens to stop stereotyping all Nepali workers over the alleged involvement of a few individuals in recent crimes. The Telangana Nepalese Welfare Association expressed concern that generalisations following cases of murder, robbery, and theft are unfair and harmful to thousands of law-abiding workers in the state.
Tek B Bhandari, General Secretary of the Telangana Nepalese Welfare Association, explained that the spread of negative messages portraying all Nepali workers as criminals has created fear. He stated that these messages have damaged the community's long-standing reputation in the region.
According to Bhandari, several generations of Nepalis have served across India as trusted Gorkha security guards. He emphasized that they have built their livelihoods through honest work and faithfulness across the city of Hyderabad and the state of Telangana.
The association estimates that there are currently between 40,000 and 50,000 Nepalis employed in Telangana. A significant portion of this population works in various sectors, particularly in security services.
To address safety concerns and rebuild trust, Bhandari urged local employers and residents to verify the credentials of Nepali workers through the association rather than relying on rumours or social media posts. The association has offered to verify the identity of workers and issue authenticated certificates bearing its official seal.
Bhandari noted that this measure would help distinguish genuine workers from impersonators or offenders. Furthermore, maintaining these verified records will assist law enforcement agencies if the need arises.
In addition to the verification offer, representatives of the association have appealed to the Telangana government to consider extending insurance coverage to Nepali security personnel. The association noted that many of these workers are responsible for protecting high-value residential and commercial properties across the state.
