Hyderabad Hosts BRICS Labour Ministers Meeting to Discuss Global Job Creation

Hyderabad was placed in the global spotlight as it hosted the BRICS labour and employment ministers' meeting on July 15 and 16. The high-profile event brought together ministers, senior officials, and representatives from international organizations to deliberate on employment generation, labour welfare, and social security.

The two-day meeting was held under India’s presidency of BRICS. The discussions primarily focused on strengthening cooperation among the member countries regarding labour markets, workforce skilling, social protection, and employment policies, particularly in the face of evolving global economic challenges.

Union Labour and Employment Minister Mansukh Mandaviya delivered the keynote address during the inaugural session of the event. He spoke alongside other ministers and heads of delegations representing the member nations of the influential bloc.

The participating countries included the original BRICS members alongside its recently added nations. The bloc, which was originally formed by Brazil, Russia, India, and China in 2009, expanded to include South Africa in 2010. In recent years, the grouping has significantly broadened its global reach by including Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and Indonesia, establishing itself as one of the most prominent forums of developing economies.

The Hyderabad gathering is part of a broader series of ministerial engagements being hosted across India this year, with the country serving as the chair of the bloc.

On the opening day of the event, a scheduled technical session was held to showcase the best labor practices and policies implemented across the various BRICS nations. The two-day meeting culminated in the official adoption of the BRICS labour and employment ministers’ declaration, cementing the shared commitments of the member states.
