Hyderabad Generates 91.1% of Telangana GST Revenue With ₹3,956 Crore in August

Hyderabad contributed 91.1% of Telangana's total Goods and Services Tax (GST) collections in August, generating ₹3,956 crore out of the state's total collection of ₹4,341 crore, according to data from the state commercial taxes department.

The city is home to around 4 lakh of Telangana's 5.8 lakh registered GST taxpayers, representing nearly 69% of the state's tax base. Hyderabad's August collections recorded a 20.53% year-on-year increase from ₹3,282 crore in August 2025 to ₹3,956 crore in August 2026. The ₹674-crore growth in Hyderabad accounted for 96.3% of the overall ₹700-crore increase in Telangana's GST revenues during the month.

GST collections per registered taxpayer in Hyderabad worked out to approximately ₹98,900, compared to ₹74,845 across Telangana as a whole. This metric reflects total collections divided by the taxpayer count rather than individual tax payments.

The high revenue concentration stems from the clustering of high-value economic sectors in the city, including information technology and IT-enabled services, pharmaceuticals, financial services, real estate, organised retail, manufacturing, and formal businesses, supported by relatively high per-capita income.

The August growth aligned with broader fiscal trends. Between April and August 2026, Hyderabad's cumulative GST collections reached ₹18,892 crore, marking a 21.60% increase from the ₹15,535 crore collected during the same period in 2025.

To manage this concentration and streamline tax administration, the commercial taxes department overhauled its field administration on June 2, 2026. Under the restructured system, the Core Urban Economy (CURE) was divided into 12 divisions and 78 circles. The Peri-Urban Region Economy (PURE) was assigned one division and five circles, while the Rural Agricultural Region Economy (RARE) was organised into six divisions and 38 circles.

A dedicated state-level Large Taxpayer Unit covering 400 major businesses was also established as part of the structural reorganisation to monitor compliance and manage major taxpayers across Telangana.
