Hyderabad Cyber Police Arrest Techie for Abusive Comments on Instagram

The Hyderabad Cyber Crime police have arrested a 30-year-old software engineer in Hyderabad for allegedly creating a fake Instagram account to post abusive, defamatory, and sexually explicit comments targeting a politically exposed woman.

The arrest followed a complaint lodged with the Hyderabad Cyber Crime Police Station regarding objectionable remarks posted on a video featuring the complainant. The video was originally uploaded by the "Pura Local" Instagram channel before circulating on social media in October 2025.

According to investigators, the accused operated a fictitious Instagram profile to hide his identity while publishing offensive remarks in a public forum. Police said the posts were designed to damage the woman's reputation, attack her dignity, and cause public humiliation through targeted online harassment.

Following the complaint, police registered a case under Sections 66(D) and 67 of the Information Technology Act, alongside Sections 79 and 238 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

The cyber crime team tracked the digital trail to identify and apprehend the accused in Hyderabad. Officers seized a mobile phone from his possession, which is being examined as part of the ongoing investigation.

Officials noted that using fake social media identities does not shield offenders from law enforcement, as digital evidence allows investigators to trace the individuals operating anonymous profiles.

The Cyber Crime police also issued an advisory urging citizens facing online harassment not to immediately delete abusive content. Instead, victims should preserve screenshots of the profile, objectionable posts, URLs, and timestamps before reporting or blocking the account. Police further advised users to strengthen their privacy settings and avoid accepting requests from unknown or newly created profiles.
