Hyderabad Civic Bodies to Distribute 4 Lakh Free Clay Ganesh Idols

Three municipal corporations across Hyderabad and its suburbs have decided to distribute four lakh clay Ganesh idols free of cost to residents for worship during the 11-day Vinayaka Chathurti festival commencing on September 14, with immersion arrangements scheduled across 25 water bodies including sites in Kukatpally.

The distribution drive is being split among the civic authorities. The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) will oversee the distribution of two lakh clay idols. Meanwhile, the Malkajgiri Municipal Corporation (MMC) and the Cyberabad Municipal Corporation (CMC) will distribute two lakh idols across their respective jurisdictions.

The idols being provided to citizens come in multiple sizes, ranging between eight inches, one foot, and 1.5 feet in height. To facilitate the initiative, the Pollution Control Board (PCB) and the Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA) are supplying the idols to the civic bodies. The GHMC will receive one lakh idols from the PCB and HMDA, while 50,000 idols each will be supplied to the MMC and the CMC.

In addition to the idol distribution, the three corporations are putting in place elaborate arrangements to facilitate the immersion process at 25 water bodies situated across Hyderabad and its suburban zones. Civic officials noted that large idols will be immersed in designated lakes, whereas small idols will be immersed in baby ponds.

Water bodies earmarked for immersion activities include lakes located in Kukatpally, IDL, Saroornagar, Kapra, Safilguda, and Hussainsagar. Data from 2025 shows that more than 2.07 lakh idols were immersed across the limits of Greater Hyderabad, of which close to 50,000 were immersed in Hussainsagar, alongside extensive immersions at the other suburban lakes.

To manage the scale of the festivities and ensure safety, over 50,000 police personnel were deployed across the city to oversee the smooth immersion of Ganesh idols, including the towering Khairatabad Ganesh idol.
