HMDA plans three-kilometer elevated corridor from Banjara Hills to PVNR Expressway

The Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA) is planning to construct a new three-kilometer, four-lane elevated corridor starting from GVK One Mall in Banjara Hills to the PVNR Expressway in Mehdipatnam to ease traffic congestion and improve airport connectivity. The proposed project, which is currently in its planning stage, aims to be completed within two years once administrative approvals are secured.

The elevated corridor will run via Masab Tank and connect directly to the PVNR Expressway near the Sarojini Devi Eye Hospital. According to HMDA plans, the project will feature five ramps along the route to ensure smooth traffic flow, alongside a massive four-lane underpass at the Masab Tank junction to eliminate traffic bottlenecks.

This infrastructure project is designed to provide signal-free travel from GVK One Mall to Aramghar via Masab Tank and NMDC, allowing commuters to reach the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport more quickly. It is also expected to significantly decongest key junctions in the area, including Masab Tank, Lakdikapul, Khairatabad, and Somajiguda, reducing peak-hour travel times.

In addition to the elevated corridor, the HMDA has decided to build a four-lane underpass on the route stretching from Banjara Hills to Vijay Nagar Colony to transform the busy Masab Tank junction. A separate pedestrian subway or underpass is also planned at this junction to facilitate safe road crossings for pedestrians.

Currently, a consultancy firm is conducting a comprehensive field-level traffic survey and soil testing in the area. This survey is measuring peak-hour vehicle counts and tracking the number of vehicles heading toward the airport.

The Detailed Project Report (DPR) and construction cost estimates will be submitted to the government soon. Following administrative approvals, HMDA officials plan to call for tenders to begin construction, with the goal of opening the corridor to the public in approximately two years.
