HMDA Plans Rs 22-Crore Landscape Makeover for NTR Gardens and Sanjeevaiah Park

HYDERABAD — The Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority is set to undertake an extensive Rs 22-crore landscape makeover across NTR Gardens and Sanjeevaiah Park in the Hussainsagar lakefront precinct. The initiative, led by the HMDA's Urban Forestry wing, aims to enhance green cover and establish an integrated landscape around the lakefront zone, which has seen major landmarks emerge in recent years including the Telangana State Secretariat, the Martyrs' Memorial, and the BR Ambedkar statue.
The revamp project will be executed across five distinct packages, comprising two at NTR Gardens and three at Sanjeevaiah Park. External agencies will be engaged to carry out comprehensive landscaping and manage subsequent maintenance. The overall scope of work involves planting and maintaining lawns, trees, palms, hedges, shrubs, and topiary, alongside regular fertilisation, pest control, trimming, and pruning activities.
At NTR Gardens, the first package has been budgeted at approximately Rs 4.64 crore. This package will cover numerous themed sections, including the Thematic Garden, Wave Garden, Petal Garden, Char Bagh, Rock Garden, Tree Garden, Food Court and Play Area, Floating Garden lawn, and the Nature Trail Garden.
The second package at NTR Gardens carries an estimated cost of Rs 4.41 crore. It includes upgrades to the main entry plaza, gathering area, and the lake-facing stretch extending from Buddha Bhavan to the Sanjeevaiah Park-I gate. This package also incorporates landscaping at Sagar Park and greenery development along the central median situated between the NTR Memorial and Gate No. 4 of the Telangana State Secretariat.
At Sanjeevaiah Park, the works are divided into three sections. Bit-I, estimated at Rs 4.84 crore, focuses on the Rose Garden, formal play area, memorial area, Plumeria Garden, pond, and Topiary Garden. Bit-II, with an outlay of Rs 4.38 crore, encompasses the Butterfly Garden, Mini Fumatorium, Sacred Groves, Flag Area, Maze Garden, Coconut Groves, Palmelium, and Bambusetum.
The third package at Sanjeevaiah Park is valued at Rs 3.84 crore. It covers the Cactus and Rock Garden, the promenade, the Herbal Garden, and the central median located directly opposite the Secretariat.
According to officials, the initiative will transition the recreational spaces into a systematic maintenance regime following the redevelopment. Mechanised equipment will be deployed for trimming, cutting, and pruning operations, with manual methods ruled out to maintain landscape standards across the precinct.
