HC questions Madhuranagar SI for dragging retired officer Mohammed Usman from Yousufguda

The Telangana High Court on Wednesday reprimanded a Madhuranagar Sub-Inspector for allegedly dragging Mohammed Usman, a 70-year-old retired Sub-Inspector, from his residence in Yousufguda, Hyderabad. Justice T Madhavi Devi, who heard the writ petition on July 1, 2026, questioned the police officer's conduct and demanded a report on the May 18, 2026 incident from the Commissioner of Police.
During the hearing, Justice Madhavi Devi examined photographs submitted as evidence, which showed Usman being forcibly taken away. The judge questioned why the retired officer was dragged out of his home wearing only a lungi and banyan and left helpless on the road while being transported to the police station.
"Will you do whatever you want merely because you are a police officer?" Justice Madhavi Devi asked the Madhuranagar Sub-Inspector.
The petitioner, Mohammed Usman, filed the writ petition seeking legal action against the responsible police officials and demanding financial compensation for the treatment he received.
The court also questioned whether Usman had been informed of the reasons for being taken to the police station. Justice Madhavi Devi noted that even if the petitioner’s son was involved in a criminal case, a retired police officer should not have been treated in such a manner.
Government Pleader for Home Mahesh Raje represented the state during the proceedings. He submitted that the petitioner’s son was an accused in a 2023 case involving an attack on police personnel, and alleged that Usman was sheltering him. Raje requested time to file a comprehensive counter-affidavit to place the full facts on record.
Justice Madhavi Devi expressed strong displeasure over the failure of the authorities to respond to the court’s earlier directions. She warned that the court might summon the Commissioner of Police to ascertain how its proceedings were being treated if the delays continued.
The High Court directed the Government Pleader to obtain a detailed report from the Commissioner of Police regarding the complaint. The matter has been adjourned, with the next hearing scheduled for July 15, 2026.
