Gudimalkapur police probe moneylender harassment after fruit vendor dies

The Gudimalkapur police in Hyderabad have launched an investigation into allegations of harassment by moneylenders after a 33-year-old fruit vendor died by suicide. The deceased, identified as K Naresh, was a resident of Bhojagutta within the Gudimalkapur area.
According to the police, Naresh had been struggling with severe financial distress caused by mounting debts and losses in his business. To support his livelihood, he had borrowed money from local moneylenders but soon found himself burdened by high interest repayments. These ongoing financial difficulties and business losses allegedly triggered disputes within his family, leaving him deeply upset.
The situation escalated on May 27, when Naresh allegedly consumed an unknown pesticide at his residence. At the time of the incident, his family members were away from the house. Upon discovering what had happened, he was rushed to a private hospital. Naresh remained under medical treatment at the facility for several days before succumbing on Thursday.
Following his death, Naresh’s family members approached the local authorities and lodged a formal complaint regarding the harassment he faced from moneylenders. Based on this complaint, the Gudimalkapur police registered a case and initiated a probe. Officers have already detained a few individuals for questioning as they investigate the matter from all angles.
During the police proceedings, former Gudimalkapur corporator Bangari Prakash visited the grieving family at the police station. Prakash expressed his support and demanded that the police take stringent action against moneylenders who allegedly collect exorbitant interest from borrowers in the area. The victim's family members have also made an appeal to the authorities to ensure that justice is delivered.
