Government Plans Rented Vending Zones at Ameerpet Junction to Boost Civic Revenue

The Telangana government is formulating plans to establish formal vending zones on government land parcels at Ameerpet Junction and opposite Satyam Theatre in Hyderabad, renting structured shops to street vendors to generate recurring income for local civic bodies.

The initiative is being prepared by the Hyderabad Unified Metropolitan Transport Authority (HUMTA), an arm of the Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA). Projected as an urban management measure, the scheme is aimed at protecting government land, easing traffic congestion, and providing organised spaces for vendors, while creating a rental revenue stream for financially strained urban local bodies.

Official sources stated that the identified plots around Ameerpet Junction are currently occupied by pushcarts, kiosks, temporary stalls, and parked vehicles. Under the proposed model, basic infrastructure will be built to house eligible vendors on a rental basis. HUMTA is currently compiling an inventory of small government-owned land parcels at major intersections and road corridors across the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC), Cyberabad Municipal Corporation, and Malkajgiri Municipal Corporation limits.

Municipal authorities and traffic police are set to be involved in surveying sites, removing unauthorised encroachments, and overseeing the allotment of shops. Officials indicated that if the Ameerpet pilot succeeds, the model will be expanded to other municipal areas to regulate street commerce and prevent vendors from reoccupying cleared roads.

The drive comes after GHMC officials recently cleared more than 1,000 footpath encroachments, though pushcart operators frequently returned to those stretches. Civic authorities had previously designated 127 vending zones across erstwhile GHMC limits with low or no rent, but several remained unoccupied because they were situated away from busy commercial corridors, leaving infrastructure such as stalls near Shilparamam and fish markets in Begum Bazaar and LB Nagar non-operational.

A senior municipal official noted that the proposal aims to formalise roadside vending at major junctions by building dedicated shops, though authorities have not yet specified the rental amounts that will be charged to vendors.
