Girish Dongre Steps Down as ACA COO, Outlines Andhra Premier League Expansion Plans

In Hyderabad, the outgoing Chief Operating Officer of the Andhra Cricket Association, Girish Dongre, has reviewed the growth of the Andhra Premier League (APL) T20 and outlined key expansion plans for the tournament as he prepares to step down. Speaking about the tournament's evolution since its revamped model launched in 2023, the 62-year-old administrator highlighted how the league has successfully bridged the gap between district-level cricket and the national stage.

Dongre stated that his immediate goal is to ensure a smooth transition of responsibilities as he steps down from his formal position. Reflecting on his tenure, he noted that he never felt like an outsider and remained focused on building trust and delivering results. Despite leaving his post, Dongre expressed his desire to remain available for guidance and to continue contributing to the development of cricket in Andhra Pradesh.

Reflecting on the league's progress, Dongre noted that the APL has provided a crucial platform for young players from across the state to showcase their skills. Many players who previously went unnoticed in district tournaments are now being actively tracked by national selectors and talent scouts. He described the league as a vital tool for enhancing visibility for rural youth.

The tournament has also expanded its physical footprint. Dongre highlighted plans for the APL to be played across multiple venues by 2026, specifically naming Vizag, Kadapa, and Mangalagiri. Recent matches in Kadapa and Mangalagiri have already drawn massive stadium crowds, demonstrating growing spectator interest both on the ground and digitally.

Managing logistics across multiple venues has presented challenges, but Dongre credited the top leadership of the Andhra Cricket Association and his dedicated team for overcoming these hurdles. He praised his staff for going beyond their call of duty to ensure the smooth conduct of the league.

Looking ahead to future editions, Dongre revealed that the league is considering the introduction of a player trading window before the next season. Additionally, the association plans to implement greater use of technology for player analytics and to enhance fan engagement.

Dongre emphasized that the APL remains the only competitive white-ball tournament conducted by a state association in the region, significantly boosting the prospects of local players.
