GHMC Launches Free Doorstep Pickup for Old Furniture and Mattresses in Charminar

The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) on Sunday, July 5, 2026, introduced a free doorstep pickup and recycling service for old mattresses and furniture across its six zones, including Charminar.
The civic body released a QR code to allow residents to book the service, aiming to stop people from dumping large household waste items on streets and in drains (nalas).
By scanning the QR code, residents are directed to a webpage where they can select the items they want to dispose of, including bedding and furniture. The system requires users to share their location to confirm that the service is available in their specific area. Once confirmed, residents must input additional details, including the quantity of the items, photographs, and a contact number to schedule the free pickup.
In a post on the social media platform X on Sunday, the GHMC urged citizens to use the service, stating, "Scan the QR code to book your FREE doorstep pickup today and ensure your old mattresses and furniture are recycled responsibly."
The service is operational across all six GHMC zones: Charminar, Secunderabad, Khairatabad, Golconda, Rajendranagar, and Shamshabad.
The initiative comes as a response to recurring drainage issues during the monsoon season. During desilting works carried out in current and previous monsoons, municipal sanitation teams have repeatedly recovered heavy garbage, including discarded wires, mattresses, chairs, and other furniture from the city's drains.
This accumulated waste has historically clogged the drains, resulting in overflowing sewage water and flooding across the city during periods of heavy rain. Other types of debris recovered during desilting efforts include discarded plastic water bottles and plastic covers.
The lack of a reliable and continuous system for disposing of heavy household articles by the three municipal corporations in the city was previously highlighted in a report published by The Hindu on June 30.
