GHMC Clears 97 MT Waste on Day 1 of Monsoon Drive in Hyderabad
The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) removed more than 97 metric tonnes of waste across Hyderabad on the first day of its newly launched 10-day special monsoon drive. The comprehensive sanitation and civic maintenance campaign was initiated across 30 municipal wards to strengthen public health measures, fix road infrastructure, and clear drainage systems ahead of monsoon rains.
According to an official press release issued by the civic body, GHMC teams cleared 36 metric tonnes of legacy municipal solid waste and 61.5 metric tonnes of construction and demolition (C&D) waste during the opening day of the drive. The dual removal of solid municipal refuse and heavy construction debris formed the bulk of the initial clearance operations.
Monsoon preparedness efforts focused heavily on road repairs and drainage maintenance to prevent urban flooding and traffic disruptions. During the first day's operations, civic crews filled a total of 109 potholes on city roads. Field workers also cleaned 105 catch pits and cleared blockages from five culverts. Furthermore, sanitation personnel removed 16.78 metric tonnes of floating material and desilted drainage lines to allow unobstructed water flow.
In addition to waste removal and road repairs, the civic body targeted water management and building oversight. GHMC initiated the construction of 19 rainwater harvesting structures across the participating wards. Officials also carried out formal surveys of 30 non-residential buildings to assess compliance and structural preparedness.
Sanitation infrastructure was another key component of the day's drive. GHMC personnel inspected 22 public toilets across the 30 wards to ensure proper hygiene standards. To encourage responsible disposal of commercial trash, municipal workers installed 99 commercial bins at various shop locations.
Public health and veterinary measures were executed simultaneously across the designated areas. Officials conducted anti-mosquito pyrethrum spraying to combat vector-borne risks. Veterinary teams engaged in animal welfare and management activities, including the vaccination of stray dogs and transferring dogs to shelters.
Horticulture and park maintenance teams lifted 34.9 metric tonnes of pruned tree branches and collected 9 metric tonnes of dry and green waste from 31 public parks. The GHMC confirmed that the intensive civic campaign will continue for nine more days across the city.
