GHMC Clears 97 MT Waste Across 30 Wards on Day 1 of Hyderabad Monsoon Drive

The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) removed more than 97 metric tonnes of waste across 30 wards in Hyderabad on the first day of a 10-day special monsoon drive. According to information shared by the civic body in a press release, official sanitation and maintenance teams removed 36 metric tonnes of legacy municipal solid waste alongside 61.5 metric tonnes of construction and demolition waste during the initial day of intensive citywide operations.

The GHMC announced that the 10-day special monsoon drive was launched with a broad focus on improving overall sanitation, repairing damaged roads, strengthening public health measures, and creating awareness among citizens. Civic workers and officials were deployed across 30 wards to carry out multiple civic and sanitation activities aimed at preparing urban infrastructure for the rainy season.

Road maintenance and drainage clearing formed a significant component of the drive's first day. GHMC teams filled 109 potholes on city roads and cleaned 105 catch pits to allow proper drainage during rains. Sanitation workers also cleared five culverts and removed 16.78 metric tonnes of silt and floating material from municipal drainage systems.

Civic infrastructure development and building checks were also undertaken as part of monsoon preparedness measures. A total of 19 rainwater harvesting structures were initiated by the civic body, while teams surveyed 30 non-residential buildings across the wards. To improve waste management in public and commercial areas, GHMC personnel inspected 22 public toilets and installed 99 commercial bins at shops.

Horticulture and sanitation activities were conducted in green spaces across the covered wards. GHMC workers lifted 34.9 metric tonnes of pruned tree branches along with 9 metric tonnes of dry and green waste collected from 31 parks.

Health and veterinary services were also integrated into the first day of the drive to address public health concerns. Interventions included pyrethrum spraying for pest control, along with stray dog vaccination and shelter-transfer measures conducted by veterinary teams.
