GHMC Bans Fresh Road Excavation In Hyderabad Until End Of Monsoon

The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has imposed an immediate citywide ban on all fresh road excavation works across Hyderabad. The restriction, which will remain in force until the monsoon season ends, is aimed at minimizing traffic disruptions, reducing road damage, and improving public safety during the rainy season.
As part of its monsoon preparedness plan, the civic body has directed all government departments, public sector utilities, and private agencies to halt any new road cutting activities. Furthermore, the GHMC has set a strict deadline of July 10 for these agencies to restore all existing excavated stretches of roads and footpaths to proper riding quality, warning that failure to comply will result in action.
The ban impacts a wide range of utility work, including the laying of optical fibre cables, water supply and sewerage pipelines, underground power cables, and gas pipelines. Key agencies and service providers covered under this directive include the Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB), TGTRANSCO, TGSPDCL, Bharti Airtel Limited, and Bhagyanagar Gas Limited.
The GHMC has instructed these agencies to prioritize the completion of ongoing works. The restoration process must adhere to specific standards, which include proper trench filling with stone dust, backfilling, compaction, and resurfacing. These measures are intended to ensure that the city's roads are fully motorable and safe for commuters.
While the ban is citywide and immediate, the GHMC Commissioner has provided an exemption for City Gas Distribution (CGD) projects. Because of their public utility nature, CGD projects have been exempted from this seasonal ban, allowing their works to continue through the monsoon until September 30, 2026.
