GHMC Approves Continuous Steel Flyovers Near KBR Park for HITEC City Traffic

GHMC Approves Continuous Steel Flyovers Near KBR Park for HITEC City Traffic

The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation Standing Committee on Saturday approved a major restructuring of road infrastructure around KBR National Park, clearing a revised plan designed to create a signal-free corridor for traffic moving to and from Madhapur and HITEC City. The new proposal replaces multiple previously planned junction-level flyovers and underpasses with continuous steel flyovers extending from Jubilee Hills Check Post Junction to Muffakham Jah College, with an additional link to Banjara Hills Road No. 1.

Under revised Package 1, the civic body will construct a steel flyover from Jubilee Hills Check Post Junction to Mugdha Junction, replacing the separate flyover and underpass originally planned between the two points. The project will substantially alter the Hyderabad City Innovative and Transformative Infrastructure plan by creating a unified elevated corridor between Jubilee Hills Check Post and Nagarjuna Circle.

Under Package 2, the GHMC has proposed cancelling standalone works originally slated for Road No. 45 Junction, Film Nagar Junction, Maharaja Agrasen Junction, and Cancer Hospital Junction. Instead, a continuous steel flyover will run from Mugdha Junction to Muffakham Jah College, supported by a connecting ramp to Banjara Hills Road No. 1. Together, Packages 1 and 2 will form an uninterrupted elevated passage across the busy perimeter of the park.

The revised plan also cancels a previously planned two-lane unidirectional flyover at NFCL Junction from Banjara Hills, along with a two-lane unidirectional underpass and a three-lane unidirectional flyover at TV9 Junction. The GHMC plans to entrust the revised infrastructure work to its existing engineering, procurement, and construction contractor, Megha Engineering and Infrastructures Ltd.

In October 2024, the Telangana state government granted administrative sanction for multi-directional flyovers and underpasses at several junctions surrounding KBR Park at an estimated cost of Rs 826 crore, an outlay that was later revised upward to Rs 1,090 crore. However, civil works stalled after a court stay order prohibited tree-felling within the park's 25-to-35-metre Eco-Sensitive Zone, forcing the civic administration to put tree cutting and translocation on hold.

To manage movement during the disruption, Hyderabad Traffic Police implemented a clockwise one-way traffic circulation system around KBR Park. Following an inspection last month, the Police Commissioner and the GHMC Commissioner observed that traffic was moving smoothly, and the municipal corporation is now considering adopting the one-way system as a permanent arrangement. The newly approved infrastructure proposal will now be submitted to the state government, after which it will be placed before EPC Committee-III and the GHMC General Body for final clearance.
