Ghatkesar Hotel Owner V Shekar Dies After Suicide Attempt Over Online Betting Losses

A 53-year-old hotel businessman from the Aushapur area in Ghatkesar, Hyderabad, died on Thursday while undergoing treatment at Gandhi Hospital following an alleged suicide attempt. The businessman, identified as V Shekar, reportedly took the extreme step due to severe financial distress stemming from substantial losses he incurred through online betting.

Shekar was a local entrepreneur who ran a hotel business together with his wife, Sridevi. His family members informed the police that he had recently developed a habit of participating in online betting activities. Over time, these betting activities led to significant financial losses, which placed a heavy burden of financial stress on him.

According to the police, the events leading to the tragedy began on June 14. Shekar returned to his residence after consuming alcohol, which led to an argument with his wife. During the altercation, Shekar allegedly attempted to end his life by hanging himself with a saree. His daughter, who was present at the scene, intervened immediately and managed to stop him from carrying out the act.

However, later that day, when no family members were around him, Shekar locked himself inside a room. He then allegedly hanged himself from a ceiling fan using a saree. His family members discovered this, forcibly opened the door, and rushed him to Gandhi Hospital for emergency medical treatment.

Despite the efforts of the medical team, Shekar died while undergoing treatment on Thursday. Following the incident, his wife Sridevi lodged a complaint with the police. Based on her complaint, the Ghatkesar police booked a case and launched a full investigation into the matter.
