George Hull Hosts Anime and Jazz Workshop at Alliance Française Hyderabad

Hyderabad-based saxophonist and educator George Hull hosted an interactive workshop exploring the relationship between anime soundtracks and jazz music at the Alliance Française Hyderabad library on Saturday evening.

The session, titled the Anime & Jazz workshop, brought together teenagers and adults in an informal setting arranged with bean bags, chairs, and floor seating among the library's bookshelves. The event aimed to demystify jazz music for local listeners by examining the genre's presence in popular animated series.

During the workshop, Hull guided attendees through a curated selection of tracks that demonstrated how jazz functions within anime storytelling. The listening list began with "Fly Me to the Moon" from Neon Genesis Evangelion, followed by Yuji Ohno's "Theme from Lupin III" and Seatbelts' "Tank!". The session also featured "Moanin'" from Kids on the Slope, Hiromi Uehara's work on Blue Giant, and Kamasi Washington's "Vortex", highlighting both classic standards and contemporary jazz compositions.

Hull explained that many viewers regularly hear jazz in the background of animated shows without actively identifying the genre. He noted that the initiative forms part of a broader effort to introduce jazz to wider audiences across Hyderabad and build greater awareness of musical nuances.

The workshop also addressed Japan's historical relationship with jazz and how the country's appreciation for traditional styles has contributed to preserving sounds that continue to influence modern media.

Participants engaged directly throughout the session, answering questions about the tracks and discussing how background scores shape the emotional tone of animated narratives. Organisers expressed hope that the workshop would encourage attendees to listen more closely to jazz instrumentation in everyday media.
