Gautam Rode Shares 'Undekhi' Acting Process And Telugu Cinema Aspirations In Hyderabad

HYDERABAD — Actor Gautam Rode has shared insights into his acting process, his transition from television to digital platforms, and his openness to joining the Telugu film industry during a visit to Hyderabad. The actor, who plays the complex character of Vikram Saluja in the web series 'Undekhi', spoke about how the over-the-top (OTT) boom has allowed actors to break free from traditional industry labels.

Rode, whose show 'Undekhi' is currently streaming its finale season on SonyLiv, revealed that he joined the cast after a successful audition. Having enjoyed the first season of the show, he was drawn to the layered and morally complex nature of Vikram Saluja, a character unlike any he had played before.

To prepare for such demanding roles, Rode explained that he follows a highly disciplined acting process. He rewrites scenes for himself to better understand the character's depth and makes detailed notes on specific mannerisms, including how the character walks, sits, speaks, and behaves. Rode also participates in workshops and discussions with the director and creative team. He noted that he never carries his script on set because he memorizes both his lines and those of the opposing actors beforehand.

According to Rode, the extensive preparation involved in OTT projects—including workshops, rehearsals, costume trials, and mock shoots—fully prepares performers before filming begins. He contrasted this with his past television work, where actors often played a single role for years. He highlighted his recent diverse roles, including playing a gay character in a Netflix show and working on an upcoming Amazon project with a completely different shade.

When asked about working in regional cinema, Rode expressed a strong interest in Telugu films. Although his previous regional experience was limited to a special appearance in a Malayalam film with mostly Hindi dialogues, he stated he is absolutely open to working in the Telugu film industry.

Rode also discussed his personal life, sharing that he does not party or socialize much, but enjoys shopping for clothes, specifically favoring linen shirts, loose trousers, and boots or sandals. Additionally, he emphasized his dedication to fitness, calling the gym his favorite place and noting that eating right and staying fit have been part of his lifestyle since his college days.
