Gachibowli Resident Gets Life Term for 2016 Murder of Congolese Wife

A local court in Rajendra Nagar, Ranga Reddy District, has sentenced 45-year-old Gachibowli resident Rupesh Kumar Mohanani to life imprisonment for the murder of his Congolese wife, Cynthia Vechel, in July 2016.

The Tenth Additional District and Sessions Judge convicted Mohanani, a private employee, for killing his wife, dismembering her body, and attempting to destroy the evidence. In addition to the life sentence, the court also imposed a fine of Rs 25,000 on the convict.

The crime came to light on July 4, 2016, when local villagers in Madanapally, Shamshabad, observed smoke and flames rising from an isolated spot near Green City Venture. Upon investigating, the villagers discovered a Ford EcoSport stuck in the mud, with Mohanani present near the vehicle alongside his minor daughter, Sania. Nearby, dismembered human remains were burning, prompting the villagers to alert the police immediately.

The deceased woman was identified as Cynthia Vechel, a national of the Republic of Congo who had married Mohanani in 2008. The couple had a daughter together and later relocated to Hyderabad, where marital discord escalated over time.

According to police investigations, frequent disputes arose over Cynthia's desire to leave India with their daughter and her continued communication with a former boyfriend in France. On the intervening night of July 3 and July 4, 2016, following a heated altercation at their residence, Mohanani throttled Cynthia to death.

Police stated that Mohanani subsequently dismembered her body using an axe and knives, placed the parts into bags, and transported them in his car to the secluded area near Madanapalle. He then poured petrol over the body parts and set them on fire in an attempt to destroy the evidence and avoid detection.

Investigators built their case using CCTV footage, forensic samples, and material evidence collected from the scene and residence. DNA testing was used to confirm the identity of the victim and link Mohanani to the killing. Following the conclusion of the trial, the court held Mohanani guilty on all major charges.
