The Gachibowli police arrested a 24-year-old man on June 25 for allegedly blackmailing a woman and extorting ₹1.1 lakh from her using private videos recorded under threat. The arrest took place in Gachibowli, Hyderabad, following an official complaint lodged by the victim on June 22.
The accused has been identified by the police as K Nagateja. The complainant, who is a private employee working in the city, had approached the Gachibowli police station to report the crime, leading to a prompt investigation by the local authorities.
According to the police, the victim first connected with Nagateja through the social media platform Snapchat. Over time, the two became close through their online interactions. On the instructions of the accused, the woman eventually agreed to meet him at a hotel room located in the Gachibowli area.
During their meeting in the hotel room, the situation turned hostile. The complainant alleged that Nagateja threatened her with a knife and forcibly recorded nude videos of her during their intimate moments.
Following the incident, Nagateja allegedly used the forcibly recorded videos and photographs to blackmail the victim. According to Gachibowli Inspector K Balaraju, the accused successfully extorted ₹1.1 lakh from the woman by threatening to release the private footage.
Unable to cope with the ongoing extortion, the victim decided to approach the Gachibowli police on June 22. Acting on her detailed complaint, the police tracked down the suspect and arrested Nagateja on June 25.
At the time of the arrest, police officers seized a knife and two mobile phones from Nagateja's possession. The seized items are believed to have been used in the commission of the crime.
Inspector Balaraju stated that, prima facie, it appears the accused is a habitual offender. The Gachibowli police have indicated that they will seek police custody of Nagateja to conduct a deeper investigation. This custody will help officers determine whether the accused has committed similar blackmail and extortion offences against other victims in the city.
