Gachibowli Hockey Stadium Secures India's First FIH Category-1 Certification

The Gachibowli Hockey Stadium in Hyderabad has received the Category-1 Field Certification from the International Hockey Federation (FIH), making it the first and only Category-1 water-based synthetic turf hockey field in India.
The certification was awarded after the FIH conducted comprehensive field and performance tests to evaluate the venue's playing surface, safety measures, lighting, and infrastructure. The FIH Category-1 certification will remain valid until February 26, 2029.
During the evaluation process, international inspectors assessed multiple parameters across the venue, including surface uniformity, ball roll and movement, field dimensions, line markings, and drainage systems. The quality checks also covered player safety standards, hockey goals, team and match officials' facilities, perimeter fencing, and spectator amenities.
Quality testing confirmed that the synthetic turf meets FIH-approved global product standards, with no manufacturing or installation deficiencies found that could hinder ball performance or match play. The surface was certified as compliant with international standards for durability, playing quality, and athlete safety.
The FIH also conducted an evaluation of the stadium's field lighting, certifying that the facility satisfies TV3-level lighting requirements prescribed for Category-1 grounds. This ensures the stadium is equipped to host broadcasted international matches.
The recognition comes following the venue's staging of the International Women's Hockey Qualifier matches, which took place at the Gachibowli Stadium from March 8 to March 13.
Dr. Soni Bala Devi, Vice Chairman and Managing Director of the Sports Authority of Telangana (SATG), said officials worked in close coordination to upgrade the venue to international specifications within a short timeframe.
"The FIH Category-1 certification is a testament to these coordinated efforts and further reinforces the capability of Gachibowli Hockey Stadium to host major international hockey events," Dr. Soni Bala Devi said.
