Five women fall ill after C-sections in Banswada, three shifted to NIMS Hyderabad

Five lactating women fell ill and developed serious health complications after undergoing caesarean sections at the Mother and Child Health Centre (MCHC) in Banswada, Kamareddy district, resulting in three patients being shifted to Nims in Hyderabad for advanced treatment. The surgeries were performed on July 10 and July 11, with the affected patients reporting symptoms between July 10 and July 12.
Hospital authorities confirmed that a total of 10 caesarean operations were performed at the centre over the course of those two days. The complications first surfaced on the night of July 10, when one patient developed breathing difficulty. This patient was quickly shifted to a hospital in Nizamabad for treatment.
Of the five surgeries conducted on July 11, a patient named Laxmipriya developed health complications later that evening. Her medical reports indicated a decline in her white blood cell count. By July 12, similar symptoms of ill-health were reported in three more lactating women who had undergone the procedure at the facility.
In response to the growing health crisis, hospital authorities shifted three of the affected women to Nims, Hyderabad, to undergo further specialized medical treatment.
Following the incidents, authorities officially halted all surgeries at the Banswada Mother and Child Health Centre on Monday. A thorough inspection of the operation theatre was conducted by the hospital administration, and samples of the medicines administered to the patients were sent for laboratory testing.
Additionally, swabs were collected from the operation theatre walls, the equipment, and the surgical clothing used by the doctors during the surgeries. These swabs were sent to a microbiology laboratory for analysis to determine if any contamination or infection source was present in the theatre.
