Fire Safety Inspection Reveals Major Hazards At Chandralok Complex In Secunderabad

On Friday, a safety inspection at the 50-year-old Chandralok Complex in Secunderabad, Hyderabad, revealed multiple fire safety violations, hazardous electrical wiring, and significant structural deterioration. The inspection was conducted by the fire services department, which warned that the aging building poses a serious risk to public safety if immediate corrective measures are not taken.

The inspection was carried out under the directions of Director-General of fire services Vikram Singh Mann. The exercise was conducted by the Secunderabad fire brigade and supervised by district fire officer Sreedas, assistant district fire officer Prabhakar Reddy, and station fire officer Shankar.

During the visit, officials found that the building failed to comply with minimum fire safety requirements. They observed significant physical deterioration, noting that portions of the structure were damaged and plaster was peeling off. Due to these structural issues, the matter will be referred to the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) for appropriate action.

The inspection also revealed outdated and hazardous electrical wiring. Fire officials stated that this issue would be brought to the notice of the Electricity Department for immediate intervention.

Furthermore, authorities noted that the Chandralok Complex lacks adequately wide staircases for safe evacuation during emergencies. They also pointed out that the absence of mandatory setback space around the structure would severely hinder the movement of fire engines and emergency personnel during rescue and firefighting operations.

Citing recent fire incidents in Secunderabad, the department stated that such safety lapses could endanger lives and property. Notices have been served on the building management, directing them to rectify the deficiencies within a stipulated period. The department warned that stringent legal action will be initiated if the management fails to comply.

Following the inspection, the fire services department added that regular fire safety inspections will continue across the state.
