Evening Rain Slows Traffic on Begumpet Flyover as Medak Records 67 mm

A sharp spell of rain caught evening rush-hour commuters off guard in parts of Hyderabad on Monday, slowing down traffic across several busy stretches in the city. The congestion was notable on the Begumpet Flyover towards Kattamaisamma, where a minor vehicle accident combined with wet road conditions to create a traffic snarl during peak hours.

Although the evening commute was made difficult at various locations, the impact across Hyderabad was uneven due to the brief and localized nature of the rainfall. Motorists were forced to slow down on wet roads, but official figures showed minimal accumulation within the immediate capital region.

Data supplied by the state Planning Department through the Telangana Development Planning Society (TGDPS) highlighted a sharp contrast in rainfall across Telangana between 8:30 am and 9 pm on Monday. Hyderabad district recorded no average rainfall during this period, while neighboring Medchal-Malkajgiri received 0.1 mm and Rangareddy recorded 0.8 mm. The average rainfall across the entire state stood at 3.9 mm.

The day's heaviest downpours were recorded outside the capital, with Medak district receiving the highest volume of rain. Medak recorded 67 mm of rainfall, followed by Shankarampet with 57.8 mm, Podichanpally with 56 mm, and Chegunta with 48.5 mm. In other parts of the state, Julurpad in Bhadradri Kothagudem received 47.5 mm, Gandhari in Kamareddy recorded 45.8 mm, and Mogdampalle in Sangareddy registered 45.5 mm.

On a district-wide level, Medak recorded the highest average rainfall in Telangana at 14.3 mm. Kamareddy followed with an average of 14 mm, Bhadradri Kothagudem with 12.8 mm, Mulugu with 11.9 mm, and Nirmal with 11.2 mm.

Looking ahead, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast light to moderate rain or thundershowers at many places across Telangana until Tuesday morning. The weather agency noted that the rainfall will be accompanied by strong surface winds ranging between 30 and 40 kmph. Isolated places, particularly in the northern and eastern districts of the state, are likely to experience heavy rain during the subsequent period.
