Engineer Overcomes 11 College Backlogs to Secure Rs 50 Lakh Senior Role

An engineer from a tier-3 college who overcame 11 academic backlogs has shared his career trajectory, detailing a journey that progressed from an entry-level salary of Rs 8,000 per month to a Senior Engineer role at a US-based firm offering a compensation package of around Rs 50 lakh.

According to an account shared on Reddit, the engineer had accumulated 11 backlogs by his final year of college. He cleared six of those papers in his final semester and secured a role as an Embedded Developer at a small startup in Lucknow upon graduating. While managing full-time work, he prepared for the remaining examinations and cleared all five backlogs within six months, officially receiving his degree in 2022.

The engineer started his career on a stipend of Rs 8,000 per month. He noted that his primary objective at the time was gaining practical experience, learning technical fundamentals, and securing an entry point into the industry. During his 11-month tenure at the Lucknow startup, he gained hands-on experience in embedded systems, device drivers, Yocto, customised operating system development, and device flashing.

He subsequently relocated to Hyderabad after accepting an opportunity that paid approximately Rs 6 lakh per annum. However, as the responsibilities in that position shifted toward cybersecurity, he chose to look for other opportunities to keep his career aligned with embedded systems and Linux development.

His next transition took him to Bengaluru, where he joined a global technology company working in the television and gaming console sector with a salary of around Rs 8 lakh per annum. Over the course of three-and-a-half years, his compensation increased to approximately Rs 12 lakh as he expanded his technical expertise.

The engineer then moved back to Hyderabad to join an Indian multinational firm at a compensation of Rs 20 lakh, working with a Korean automotive client. After four months in the role, he opted to switch jobs once again due to a perceived lack of technical growth.

He ultimately accepted an offer from a US-based organisation for the position of Senior Engineer with an annual package of approximately Rs 50 lakh. Reflecting on his career path, the engineer noted that early academic setbacks do not determine one's final destination, emphasising the value of continuous learning, persistent effort, and calculated risks.
