EkChitra Opens New Permanent Art Space in Madhapur

Art initiative EkChitra has established a new permanent gallery space in Madhapur to connect contemporary art with regional histories, heritage, and emerging artists.

Founded by artist and curator Annapurna Madipadiga, who spent eight years developing EkChitra through unconventional spaces, the permanent address was created to address a shortage of public art spaces in Hyderabad and to build a long-term ecosystem for the arts.

The new gallery hosts initiatives such as 'Converge by EkChitra', which brings together varied creative practices and disciplines. The space aims to facilitate exchanges between painting, sculpture, mixed media, new media, writers, and poets rather than segregating art into rigid categories.

EkChitra is also focusing on the artistic histories of Hyderabad and the Telugu states through projects including Living Temple – Edition 2, Keerthanam, and Baoli Art Sangam, which links contemporary art with heritage and local communities.

Madipadiga explained that her interest in regional art history developed partly through stories shared by her father, who studied under earlier generations of artists and knew figures like G. D. Paul Raj, Laxma Goud, and Thota Vaikuntam. EkChitra has begun documenting lesser-known artistic histories and plans to provide a platform for families, artists, and researchers.

In addition to historical documentation, the gallery focuses on mentoring and supporting younger practitioners by guiding them through their careers. Upcoming exhibitions at the Madhapur space are set to showcase works across multiple mediums created primarily by emerging artists.
