EFLU Upholds Suspension of 14 ABVP and NSUI Students Over Hyderabad Campus Clash

The English and Foreign Languages University (EFLU) in Hyderabad stated on Friday that the suspension of 14 students belonging to the ABVP and NSUI will remain in effect until an internal inquiry into last week's campus clash is completed.

The university suspended seven students each from the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) and the National Students' Union of India (NSUI). The suspended group comprises 10 undergraduate students, one postgraduate student, and three PhD scholars.

An EFLU official said the administration will set up an inquiry commission headed by a senior professor to examine the violence and the allegations raised by both groups. The official noted that there has been no decision to revoke the disciplinary action, as the incident must be examined from both sides.

Both student outfits have demanded the immediate revocation of the suspensions while trading accusations over the confrontation. The NSUI alleged that ABVP members made casteist remarks against a member and assaulted the EFLU students' union vice-president during an August 13 protest near the Mahlaq Bai Chanda Hostel (MBCH). NSUI representative Rishit Nayak stated that ABVP members later entered Basheer Hostel with sticks, injuring seven students, four of whom suffered head injuries.

ABVP denied the accusations. Priyank Shekhar, ABVP vice-president at EFLU, stated that members were holding a peaceful demonstration outside MBCH over hostel room issues, sanitation, drinking water, and the provost's administration. He claimed ABVP members were attacked inside Basheer Men's Hostel and assaulted when others went to assist them.

Separately, the EFLU students' union called for time-bound accountability and accused the administration, specifically the deputy proctor and Basheer Hostel warden, of attempting to prevent police from registering a case.

Following complaints from both groups, the Osmania University police registered cases under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) sections relating to voluntarily causing hurt, wrongful confinement, house-trespass, criminal intimidation, and rioting. Police confirmed that seven ABVP members were remanded to judicial custody before receiving bail, while seven NSUI members received station bail.
