Dr Kanike Priyanka Laid to Rest in Jogulamba Gadwal After Fatal Accident

Residents of Eklaspur village in Jogulamba Gadwal district gathered on August 10 to bid farewell to Dr. Kanike Priyanka, whose last rites were performed at the village cremation ground. The body of the medical student was handed over to her family following a post-mortem examination at Gandhi Hospital earlier in the day.

Dr. Priyanka was pursuing an MD in Dermatology, Venereology, and Leprology at GSL Medical College in Rajamahendravaram, Andhra Pradesh. On August 3, she and a friend were travelling on a two-wheeler near a mall in Rajamahendravaram when their vehicle was rammed by a car allegedly driven by intoxicated men.

She suffered severe head injuries in the crash and was shifted to KIMS Hospital in Secunderabad for advanced critical care. Doctors declared her brain-dead on August 9.

A senior health official confirmed that the post-mortem examination was completed at Gandhi Hospital at around 11:30 a.m. on August 10, after which the body was transported to her native village in Jogulamba Gadwal for the final rites amidst an outpouring of grief from family and friends.

The Rajamahendravaram police registered a case of culpable homicide not amounting to murder against two accused, identified as Suravarapu Daswanth and Andrew Joseph Edwards.

Her death has triggered widespread demands for action from medical associations across Telangana. The Telangana Junior Doctors Association demanded the immediate arrest of all those responsible, alongside a fair, transparent, and time-bound investigation. The association also called for the immediate preservation and examination of CCTV footage and other available evidence.

Similarly, the Healthcare Reforms Doctors Association urged the Chief Minister and Deputy Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh to personally intervene in the investigation. The association requested that authorities ensure a time-bound probe and pursue the maximum punishment permissible under the law against the accused.
