Dr Abid Moiz releases two books in Hyderabad promoting Urdu in science and medicine

On 30 June 2026, Hyderabad-based physician, nutritionist, and scholar Dr. Abid Moiz published his two latest books, 'Shayari Zaria-e-Izzat Nahin' and 'Istelahaat: Bojhiye aur Banaiye'. The new publications advocate for the Urdu language to transcend its traditional poetic associations and embrace science, medicine, and modern scholarship.

Dr. Moiz, who has authored more than 40 books on health, medicine, science, humour, and language, aims to challenge the stereotype that Urdu is solely a language of poetry, ghazals, and mushairas. His latest releases bring his total number of published works close to 50.

The first book, 'Shayari Zaria-e-Izzat Nahin' (Poetry is not a means of earning honour), derives its title from a famous couplet by Mirza Ghalib. Through this work, Dr. Moiz argues that scholarship, science, medicine, and research deserve equal respect alongside poetic recognition. The book features essays written during his stay in Saudi Arabia, where he organized literary gatherings. It includes humorous essays like 'Wazan Sambhal Ke', 'Daad Talab', and 'Arz Kiya Hai' to gently satirize the eccentricities of literary circles.

The second book, 'Istelahaat: Bojhiye aur Banaiye', addresses the development of scientific and technical terminology in Urdu. Dr. Moiz argues that languages survive only when they adapt to new knowledge and changing times.

While acknowledging the decline of Urdu-medium education, Dr. Moiz advocates for flexibility, noting that widely accepted English words like computer, internet, and television do not always need to be replaced. He highlights that Urdu already possesses rich scientific terms, such as 'buland fishar-e-khoon' for hypertension and 'falaki harkiyat' for celestial mechanics.

By explaining medical roots, prefixes, suffixes, and technical abbreviations, Dr. Moiz aims to make scientific terminology accessible to students and readers.
