Director Vishnu Vardhan Reflects on Making Panjaa Ahead of Theatrical Re-Release

Director Vishnu Vardhan shared insights into the creative process and production of the Telugu action drama Panjaa ahead of the film's 4K re-release in theatres on September 2, scheduled to coincide with actor Pawan Kalyan's birthday.

Speaking about the origins of the project, Vishnu recalled that his initial meeting with Pawan Kalyan took place without a concrete script in hand. A shared interest in firearms provided an immediate connection between the director and the lead actor, ultimately serving as the starting point for developing the feature film.

Vishnu explained that his primary objective was to showcase Pawan Kalyan in a manner distinct from typical commercial cinema. Rather than incorporating loud hero elevations, the director chose to emphasize the actor's screen presence, attitude, and understated personality, shaping a protagonist who spoke infrequently while projecting authority. Loyalty served as a central character trait that guided both the character's motives and the restrained execution of the film's action blocks.

The director also discussed his departure from Billa 2, a project he was originally attached to helm with Tamil actor Ajith. Due to mounting scheduling conflicts, Vishnu made the professional decision to step away from the sequel and proceed with Panjaa, noting that Ajith was understanding of the circumstances at the time.

Vishnu credited dialogue writer Abburi Ravi for the concise script, noting that the creative team deliberately avoided lengthy dialogues in favor of gestures, expressions, and minimal lines to preserve the film's controlled and stylish tone.

Fifteen years following its original theatrical release, Vishnu described Panjaa as one of his personal favourites despite its initial box office performance, as the film heads back to the big screen for fans.
