Designers Shyamal and Bhumika launch Mehraya couture collection in Hyderabad

Designers Shyamal and Bhumika Shodhan have launched their latest couture collection, 'Mehraya,' in Hyderabad. Inspired by the rich heritage, stepwells, ancient arches, and monuments of Mehrauli, the new collection blends historical architectural elements with modern fashion to create lightweight, heirloom-worthy festive and wedding wear.
The collection was born out of a drive through the historic lanes of Mehrauli, where the designer duo found inspiration in the centuries-old structures. According to Bhumika Shodhan, the stepwells, ancient arches, and jalis motivated them to incorporate that architectural elegance into wearable art that can be passed down through generations.
The designers focused on the concept of 'quiet grandeur,' prioritizing effortless elegance and craftsmanship over overt glamour. Shyamal Shodhan explained that the collection relies on rich craftsmanship, vintage-toned fabrics treated with age-old techniques, and ease of movement to achieve a romantic, lightweight feel.
'Mehraya' features a diverse range of silhouettes, including panelled lehengas paired with structured corsets, floor-length anarkalis, kalidaars, architecture-inspired tunics, fluid sarees, and sheer cape dupattas. The garments are crafted from breathable materials such as silks, organzas, tulle, crepes, and fluid drapes, ensuring comfort and movement for summer weddings and celebrations.
The color palette of the collection directly mirrors the architectural and forest landscapes of Mehrauli. It includes muted ivories, antique golds, earthy neutrals, and faded rose tones, alongside deep jewel colors like ruby reds, forest greens, rani pinks, and sapphire blues.
Traditional craftsmanship remains central to the collection's design philosophy. Bhumika Shodhan noted that they utilized intricate hand-woven embroidery techniques, including zardozi, aari, peeta, and resham. The collection also incorporates handcrafted floral motifs, delicate beadwork, and layered textures inspired by nature and architectural carvings.
The designers noted that the collection is designed to align with the evolving nature of modern Indian weddings, which are becoming more personal and intentional. The pieces are created to offer a balance of tradition, modernity, and ease for brides, grooms, family members, and guests alike.
