Demolitions For Masjid Banda Road Widening Trigger Severe Traffic Congestion

On 4 July 2026, a joint demolition drive by the Cyberabad Municipal Corporation (CMC) and the Hyderabad Disaster Response and Asset Protection Agency (HYDRAA) between Masjid Banda and the Botanical Garden caused severe traffic congestion. The government agencies launched the drive to clear illegal encroachments and prepare the busy stretch for a proposed 120-foot road-widening project. The demolition activities took place near Dr B R Ambedkar Circle, leading to long delays for commuters.
The civic authorities deployed earthmovers to dismantle illegal structures and encroachments on both sides of the road. Among the structures targeted were temporary sheds and various commercial encroachments that had been built along the roadside. Officials confirmed that these unauthorized structures in the A-Block and B-Block areas of Sriram Nagar Colony were completely removed during the operation.
As the heavy machinery cleared the structures, traffic on the stretch slowed down significantly. Commuters navigating the work zone faced major delays, with vehicles crawling through the affected area. In response to the slow-moving traffic, authorities advised commuters to take alternate routes to avoid the bottleneck between Masjid Banda and the Botanical Garden.
To ensure the demolition and road-widening works proceeded without disruption, police personnel were deployed to the area. The police presence was aimed at preventing any untoward incidents or potential protests by local residents and shopkeepers affected by the drive. Under police protection, the demolition crew and CMC officials continued the expansion works.
The ultimate goal of the CMC's proposed 120-foot road-widening project between Masjid Banda and the Botanical Garden Road is to ensure the free movement of traffic in the future. However, the immediate execution of the project has temporarily disrupted daily commutes, leaving local drivers to navigate the resulting congestion.
