Delayed Yousufguda drain work disrupts 200 families in Rahmat Nagar

Around 200 families in Rahmat Nagar, Yousufguda, Hyderabad, are facing severe disruptions to their daily lives and businesses due to delayed stormwater drain construction by the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) during the monsoon season. The infrastructure project, which commenced in May 2026, has progressed slowly through late June 2026, raising fears of severe inundation among local residents during heavy rains.

The execution of the project has drawn criticism for disregarding standard norms that advise against taking up major infrastructure works during the monsoon season. Residents complained that the deep earth excavation works for the stormwater drain have been progressing at a snail's pace. Although the works began in May, locals reported that there has not been much progress visible at the site.

The ongoing construction has significantly lengthened daily commutes in the neighborhood. Residents stated that they are now forced to detour for at least 15 to 20 minutes to reach their homes, a trip that previously took only five minutes. Nikhil, a local resident, expressed frustration over the situation, noting that nearly a month has passed with no real progress while the area has been left with an unbearable stench.

Local businesses have also suffered major financial hits. Shopkeepers reported that their shops have been shut for the past two months because of the stormwater drain works. They stated that the GHMC dumped excavated mud directly in front of their shops, which completely cut off access for consumers and forced the owners to close down their businesses.

GHMC officials acknowledged the delay, explaining that the works were originally aimed to be completed within a single month. They attributed the slow progress to the ongoing rains and a shortage of workforce. However, the corporation has promised that the stormwater drain work will finally be completed by the first week of July 2026.
