DCP S. Srinivas inspects Himayatsagar reservoir to review monsoon safety

On Monday, June 29, 2026, Rajendranagar Zone Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) S. Srinivas conducted a detailed inspection of the Himayatsagar reservoir, its surrounding areas, and downstream catchment areas in Rajendranagar, Hyderabad. The inspection was carried out as part of the Hyderabad Police’s monsoon preparedness measures to review critical safety arrangements ahead of anticipated heavy rainfall in the region.
DCP Srinivas was accompanied during the inspection by the Rajendranagar police inspector, key officials of the Irrigation and Water Resources Department, and other departmental officers. The joint team assessed the physical state of the reservoir and coordinated on emergency protocols.
The inspection followed preparatory actions taken on Sunday, June 28, 2026, when Rajendranagar MLA T. Prakash Goud lifted one of the reservoir’s 17 gates by one foot. According to officials, this gate-opening was executed as part of the standard monsoon protocol to facilitate the controlled release of water ahead of anticipated heavy inflows into the reservoir.
During Monday's review, the DCP evaluated the contingency plans designed for a situation in which heavy rainfall causes the Himayatsagar reservoir to reach its full capacity. Such a scenario would require all 17 gates to be opened simultaneously. The assessment specifically analyzed the potential impact of massive water releases on residents living in the downstream catchment areas and those near the Outer Ring Road.
Following the assessment, DCP Srinivas directed the departmental officials to ensure that all necessary precautionary measures are firmly in place so that no danger or inconvenience is caused to the public. He also instructed the departments to install clearly visible barricades at vulnerable locations along the downstream paths. Finally, the DCP urged both the officials and local residents to remain highly alert and fully prepared to respond to any emergency that may arise during the monsoon season.
