Cyberabad Municipal Corporation Releases Oil Balls in Quarry to Curb Mosquitoes

Entomology field staff of the Cyberabad Municipal Corporation have released oil balls into a rainwater-filled quarry in Cyberabad, Hyderabad, in an effort to curb mosquito breeding. The field operation was conducted under the direct supervision of the Assistant Medical Officer of Health (AMOH) during the corporation's current monsoon preparedness period.
The rainwater-filled quarry was specifically identified by the entomology team as a major potential mosquito breeding source. Municipal officials chose this specific method because the quarry contains stagnant, polluted water where conventional source reduction techniques are not feasible.
The oil balls work by forming a thin surface film over the stagnant water in the quarry. This thin film prevents mosquito larvae and pupae from developing into adult mosquitoes. By disrupting this lifecycle, the intervention effectively stops the formation of adult mosquitoes.
According to the Cyberabad Municipal Corporation, this activity is part of an intensified monsoon preparedness effort. It is also integrated into the corporation's wider vector management strategy, which aims to prevent the spread of dangerous vector-borne diseases, including dengue and malaria, throughout the locality.
In addition to the quarry intervention, the corporation stated that its strategy relies on continuous surveillance and active larval source management. Officials also stressed that community participation remains a key component in ensuring a mosquito-free environment in the area.
