Cyberabad Municipal Corporation Proposes Plant to Turn Green Waste into Fuel

The Cyberabad Municipal Corporation (CMC) in Hyderabad has proposed setting up a green waste to bio-briquette processing plant to convert tree-pruning and horticultural waste into renewable industrial fuel.
The facility, planned under a Public Private Partnership (PPP) model, will initially process at least 5 tonnes of green waste per day. Officials stated that the plant's operational capacity could be expanded in the future depending on the volume of green waste generated across the corporation's limits.
The project is designed to process tree-pruning waste, horticultural waste, avenue plantation residues, and other biodegradable green materials into bio-briquettes, which serve as an alternative fuel for industries. The initiative aims to reduce open burning and prevent the dumping of green waste into landfills by converting it into a commercially usable commodity.
Envisaged as a circular-economy initiative, the project will generate revenue through the commercial sale of bio-briquettes and the potential monetisation of carbon credits. CMC is considering a commercial framework based on sharing net operational profits and carbon-credit revenue with the private operator, rather than entering into a conventional purchase or supply contract.
Under the proposed PPP terms, the CMC will provide suitable land, facilitate the steady supply of municipal green waste, and assist with electricity connections alongside necessary administrative and statutory clearances.
The selected private partner will be tasked with designing, installing, and commissioning the processing plant, as well as providing all required machinery, equipment, and manpower. The private entity will handle day-to-day operations and maintenance, manage waste processing, maintain environmental and quality compliance, and market the finished bio-briquettes.
Additionally, the private partner will be responsible for the registration, monitoring, and monetisation of carbon credits produced by the facility. The civic body plans to engage firms experienced in biomass processing, waste management, renewable energy, and bio-briquette manufacturing.
