Cyberabad Municipal Corporation Plans Clearance of Gachibowli Debris Mounds

Massive heaps of construction and demolition waste accumulated over more than a decade along the IKEA-AIG Hospital stretch in Gachibowli are being evaluated for clearance by the Cyberabad Municipal Corporation.
The towering mounds of debris, situated in the heart of Hyderabad's IT corridor, comprise pulled-down walls, pillars, concrete blocks, stone rubble, bricks, wood, rusted steel, aluminum, iron fixtures, rexine, and discarded clothing. The unchecked dumping has choked the surrounding air with dust and created safety and environmental hazards in the bustling commercial zone.
Venugopal Reddy, Additional Commissioner of the Solid Waste wing in the newly formed Cyberabad Municipal Corporation, stated that the civic body has initiated measures to address the long-standing waste accumulation. Last month, the corporation invited expressions of interest from specialised firms to handle the disposal, drawing responses from seven to eight companies.
Civic officials noted that tackling the debris is a complex operation due to the area's round-the-clock commercial activity and proximity to numerous multinational IT and ITES companies. Because burning the waste on-site or rapid hauling is unfeasible without causing severe dust pollution, the civic body is drawing up a phased plan to clear the mounds over several months.
The corporation is currently evaluating modern technologies for waste disposal, studying the composition of the heaps, and assessing project costs. A detailed report will be submitted to the Municipal Administration and Urban Development department by the first week of next month for a final decision.
