CSIR-IICT Transfers Diabetic Foot Ulcer Drug Technology to Viridis Biopharma

CSIR–Indian Institute of Chemical Technology (CSIR-IICT), located in Hyderabad, signed a Technology Transfer Agreement with Viridis Biopharma Pvt Ltd on August 12, 2026. The agreement transfers technology for an Investigational New Drug (IND)-ready phytopharmaceutical developed to treat diabetic foot ulcers.

The therapeutic technology was developed by researchers from the Department of Applied Biology at CSIR-IICT. The research effort was led by Dr Anthony Addlagatta, alongside key research team members Dr Srigiridhar Kotamraju and Dr Aruna Jangam.

Developed from Gymnema sylvestre, the drug represents an effort to translate traditional botanical resources into scientifically validated therapeutic products with potential for clinical and global regulatory development. In addition to treating diabetic foot ulcers, the technology holds potential applications for other chronic wounds and inflammatory skin disorders.

Prior to the agreement, the technology underwent extensive preparation and testing. This included botanical standardisation, pharmacological evaluation, mechanism-of-action studies, analytical characterisation, and pharmacokinetic studies.

Furthermore, the research team completed formulation development, Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) process development, stability evaluations, and Good Laboratory Practice (GLP)-compliant safety studies.
