CPI(M) and BJP Slam Revanth Reddy Over Naming Hyderabad Road After Donald Trump

On Wednesday, June 17, 2026, the Communist Party of India (Marxist) joined the Bharatiya Janata Party in strongly criticizing Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy over the state's decision to name a road adjoining the US Consulate in Hyderabad after US President Donald Trump. CPI(M) leader M A Baby condemned the move as pro-imperialist and urged the Congress high command to intervene and ensure the decision is withdrawn.

The Telangana government recently announced that the road next to the US Consulate in the city would be named "Donald Trump Avenue." Official sources indicated that the road is expected to be inaugurated on June 23.

Expressing strong opposition, CPI(M) general secretary M A Baby contrasted the decision with a historical event in Kolkata. He noted that during the American war in Vietnam, India renamed Harrington Street outside the US Consulate in Kolkata to Ho Chi Minh Sarani to honor the anti-imperialist leader.

Baby criticized the decision to honor Trump, calling him the face of imperialist war at a time of global conflicts. He alleged that the Congress-led state government, like the BJP-led central government, was surrendering India's sovereignty and self-respect. He urged the Congress high command to take note of the move and ensure it is reversed, stating that claims of carrying on anti-imperialist ideals must not be limited to words.

Baby also criticized the BJP-led central government, alleging it failed to register a proper protest after the US Navy recently attacked an unarmed commercial ship, killing three Indian sailors. He claimed that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had refused to comment on the matter.

The BJP also targeted the state government over the naming. Telangana BJP president N Ramchander Rao stated that the decision exposed the hypocrisy of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi. Rao argued that the move reflected a "slavery mindset" of the Congress party toward foreign powers, pointing out the silence of national leadership on the matter.
