Congress High Command Delays Action Against Konda Surekha and G Chinna Reddy

In Hyderabad, the Congress central leadership has held back on taking immediate disciplinary action against Telangana Minister Konda Surekha and senior party leader G Chinna Reddy, despite sustained pressure from Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy and recommendations from the state party unit.

The push for action gained momentum after Revanth Reddy's camp mobilised 18 MLAs to publicly oppose Surekha. In a parallel move, MLA Megha Reddy lodged a formal complaint against Chinna Reddy with All India Congress Committee (AICC) president Mallikarjun Kharge. The Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) disciplinary committee subsequently recommended action against both leaders and forwarded the matter to the national leadership for a final decision.

However, the high command has hesitated due to concerns over regional and caste equations. Party leaders fear that disciplinary action against Surekha could trigger a backlash among Backward Class (BC) communities, particularly in erstwhile Warangal, and escalate into an anti-BC political controversy. The Konda family has sought appointments with the central leadership in New Delhi, raising the prospect of wider political friction.

A future Cabinet expansion or reshuffle is considered a possible route to address Surekha's ministerial status without framing her removal as a factional victory for the Chief Minister.

In the case of Chinna Reddy, party leaders are cautious about alienating long-time loyalists in erstwhile Mahabubnagar. Concerns exist that he could become a focal point for discontented workers, following the exit of T Jeevan Reddy in north Telangana. Questions of consistency have also been raised within the party, with leaders asking why Chinna Reddy faces scrutiny while Munugode MLA Komatireddy Rajgopal Reddy and Jadcherla MLA Anirudh Reddy were not penalised for remarks against party colleagues.

The central leadership currently appears inclined to keep both cases on hold while evaluating the wider political impact on the party organisation in Telangana.
