Concrete Mixer Operators Protest Outside Khairatabad RTO Over Rs 25,000 Fines

On Tuesday, 7 July 2026, concrete mixer operators and construction workers staged a protest outside the Regional Transport Office (RTO) in Khairatabad, Hyderabad. The demonstration was organized to oppose the heavy penalties recently imposed on their vehicles by transport authorities, which the workers claim are directly threatening their livelihoods.
The protest coincided with a Telangana bandh call that had been given by the operators' and workers' associations. The bandh was called to draw attention to what the associations described as excessive and unreasonable fines targeting their transport operations.
According to the protesting operators, RTO officials, along with the police, have recently intensified their enforcement drives specifically against concrete mixer vehicles. They alleged that the authorities have been imposing hefty fines of up to Rs 25,000 per vehicle during these operations.
The demonstrators accused the transport authorities of targeting them primarily to meet enforcement goals. They stated that the officials are ignoring the severe economic hardships currently faced by workers within the construction sector due to these high penalties.
During the protest, the demonstrators raised slogans against the RTO and laid siege to the Khairatabad office. They demanded that the authorities implement an immediate rollback of the heavy penalties.
Tension quickly built up outside the office after a heated argument broke out between the protesters and police personnel on duty. The police warned the demonstrators against entering the RTO premises without permission and repeatedly asked them to disperse.
The protesters initially refused to leave, insisting that they would continue their agitation until their demands were addressed. This led to a tense standoff outside the Khairatabad RTO office for some time before the crowd finally dispersed.
