CMC Nears Completion of Rs 90 Lakh Road Repair Project in Chandanagar

The Rs 90 lakh road repair and restoration project covering key stretches in Chandanagar, including the road from PMJ Jewellery to KSR Enclave, is nearing completion. Addressing public grievances regarding delayed road repairs, Municipal Commissioner G Srijana announced that the remaining 290-meter stretch near KSR Enclave is expected to be completed within a day or two, subject to weather conditions. The project also covers the PJR Enclave stretch up to the Ayyappa Swamy Temple and the arterial route from Aparna Hill Park to the Chandanagar main road.
The road works had faced prolonged delays, which Commissioner Srijana attributed to multiple administrative and market challenges. The original contractor failed to commence the work, which was further complicated by a steep escalation in bitumen prices. This led to the cancellation of the initial contract and required repeated re-tendering before the project was finally awarded to a new contractor.
While the road stretch up to the Ayyappa Swamy Temple has already been completed, the remaining portion near KSR Enclave is being prioritized. Local resident Dheeraj had raised concerns over the inordinate delay in repairing these pothole-ridden streets, which serve as vital routes for commuters.
In addition to the physical reconstruction of the roads, the Chandanagar Municipal Circle (CMC) is also addressing road safety hazards on these stretches. Responding to queries from resident Anupama regarding unauthorized traffic barriers, Commissioner Srijana stated that the CMC is actively removing unauthorized speed breakers, traffic cones, and barricades in coordination with the Traffic Police.
The commissioner clarified that speed breakers are only permitted after receiving formal approval from the Traffic Police and must be constructed strictly in accordance with Indian Roads Congress (IRC) norms. Resident Welfare Associations (RWAs) have been instructed not to install any speed breakers or traffic obstructions without prior approval.
To enforce these guidelines, the municipal corporation and traffic authorities are conducting regular joint inspections and special Saturday drives to clear unauthorized obstructions and take action against violators.
To prevent future deterioration of the local network, the CMC is continuously identifying damaged road stretches through regular field inspections and public feedback. Commissioner Srijana emphasized that repair and maintenance works are being taken up on a priority basis to improve overall road conditions across the area.
