CMC Demolishes 47 Illegal Buildings in Hyderabad as Partial Razing Draws Questions

The Cyberabad Municipal Corporation’s (CMC) ongoing crackdown against unauthorised under-construction buildings neared the 50 mark on Thursday, following the collapse of an illegal structure at Anjaiahnagar earlier in the week. However, the drive has faced scrutiny over the partial demolition of structures, including at a site in Nanakramguda.

According to municipal officials, the corporation demolished 21 unauthorised buildings on Thursday. This followed the razing of nine buildings on August 24 and 17 buildings on August 25, bringing the total number of targeted illegal structures to 47 across the drive.

Despite the reported figures, questions have emerged regarding the effectiveness and thoroughness of the demolitions on the ground. A visit to one of the designated sites at Nanakramguda revealed that workers had only removed portions of the roof and concrete slabs using drilling equipment. The work left steel reinforcement bars exposed, while a significant portion of the building structure remained fully standing and intact.

It could not be established whether the entire structure at the Nanakramguda site had received an official order for complete demolition, or whether the remaining standing portion was deemed safe or legally permissible by civic authorities.

When contacted regarding the issue, the concerned civic officer stated that the matter would be inquired into on Friday and that appropriate action would follow. However, repeated attempts to obtain specific clarification regarding the reasons behind the partial demolition went unanswered.
