Citizens Specialty Hospital Doctors Save Woman With Rare 19-cm Uterine Fibroid

Doctors at Citizens Specialty Hospital in Hyderabad have successfully performed a life-saving emergency surgery on a 41-year-old woman who presented with a rare and life-threatening 19-centimetre giant uterine fibroid and uterine torsion. The patient, who traveled from Bhubaneswar, had arrived at the Hyderabad hospital in critical condition before the medical team intervened to save her life.
The patient was initially admitted to the facility after experiencing severe abdominal pain. Upon her medical evaluation, doctors also discovered that she was severely anaemic. Diagnostic imaging was quickly conducted, which subsequently revealed the presence of the giant 19-cm uterine fibroid.
In addition to the massive fibroid, the imaging scans showed uterine torsion. This is an uncommon and highly dangerous medical condition where the uterus twists on its supporting structures. Given the life-threatening nature of these combined conditions, the medical team determined that immediate surgical intervention was required and prepared the patient for an emergency procedure.
The surgical team performed a complex multi-step operation, which included an emergency hysterectomy, a bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy, and an appendectomy. The operation was highly challenging, as the surgeons had to navigate significant complications during the procedure, including active internal bleeding and a severely distorted internal anatomy caused by the giant fibroid.
To support the patient through the blood loss and the physical strain of the complex procedure, she was administered three units of packed red blood cells.
The successful emergency operation was performed by Dr. Jyoti Kankanala, a consultant obstetrician and gynaecologist at Citizens Specialty Hospital. Dr. Kankanala was supported by a medical team that included Pratap Varma, Vani, and anaesthetist Dr. Madhukar Goud.
Following the surgery, the patient made a successful recovery despite the severe complications encountered during the operation. After showing consistent progress and stabilizing, she was officially discharged from the hospital in stable condition.
