Ceiling Collapses at Government City College Near Charminar, MLA Demands Repairs

A portion of a corridor ceiling collapsed on Monday morning at the historic Government City College near Charminar, causing concern among students and faculty members. No casualties were reported in the incident.

The institution, which accommodates roughly 6,000 students across various courses, experienced the collapse inside one of its heritage corridors. Following the incident, Charminar MLA Mir Zulfiqar Ali visited the campus to inspect the overall condition of the century-old structure.

During his inspection, the MLA examined corridors adjoining the Physics, Chemistry, Botany, and Zoology departments, as well as the area near the college library. The collapse has brought renewed attention to the structural integrity of the landmark building and the necessity for immediate safety measures.

Speaking during his visit, Mir Zulfiqar Ali stressed that the incident highlighted the pressing need for a comprehensive structural assessment and rapid restoration work. He stated that the safety of students and staff must be given top priority, while every effort should be made to preserve the historic character of the heritage institution.

Government City College stands as one of Hyderabad's oldest educational institutions. Its history traces back to 1865, when the sixth Nizam, Mahbub Ali Khan, founded the Madrasa Dar-ul-uloom. The school was subsequently converted into City High School by the seventh Nizam, Osman Ali Khan.

The institution relocated to its current structure in 1921 and was upgraded to a college in 1929. Commissioned by the Hyderabad City Improvement Board, the building was designed and constructed by British architect Vincent Esch, with Nawab Khan Bahadur Mirza Akbar Baig serving as the chief engineer.
