BRS and Congress Spar Over Credit for TIMS Sanathnagar Hospital Project

A political dispute has broken out between the Bharat Rashtra Samithi and the ruling Congress government over ownership and credit for the Telangana Institute of Medical Sciences hospital in Sanathnagar, Hyderabad, following the campus's formal inauguration on August 17, 2026.

The BRS has countered claims made by Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy's administration, releasing a detailed project timeline to assert that former Chief Minister K. Chandrashekar Rao conceived the decentralized super-specialty healthcare model, sanctioned the required funds, and initiated construction.

According to project records highlighted by the BRS, the plan to establish four multi-super-specialty TIMS hospitals encircling Hyderabad was developed during the COVID-19 pandemic to reduce reliance on single facilities like Gandhi Hospital. The initiative initially began with the conversion of the Gachibowli sports facility into a 1,500-bed COVID-19 care centre following a government order issued in April 2020.

In January 2022, the previous administration established a policy roadmap to construct permanent TIMS hospitals in four corners of the city. On April 21, 2022, administrative approval and funding of Rs 2,679 crore were granted for three new campuses located in Sanathnagar, Alwal, and LB Nagar.

Former Chief Minister K. Chandrashekar Rao performed the foundation stone laying ceremonies for the three mega-complexes simultaneously on April 26, 2022. Former Health Minister T. Harish Rao oversaw administrative clearances, site allocations, and execution contracts during that tenure.

Ground construction at the 1,000-bed Sanathnagar site was formally commenced by infrastructure firm MEIL on February 8, 2023. The BRS maintains that the foundational groundwork and structural execution were firmly in place before the current Congress administration presided over the project's completion milestones.
